Juan Carlos I arrives in Spain this Thursday after 655 days of self-exile in Abu Dhabi

King Juan Carlos plans to travel to Spain this Thursday, for the first time since on August 3, 2020, he voluntarily left the country for Abu Dhabi. The King's father will land in Vigo late in the afternoon and from there he will travel to the coastal town of Sanxenxo, where a nautical competition is being held this weekend.

Sanxenxo was precisely the last enclave of Spanish territory in which he was before his departure, which this Friday marks 655 days. There he has a group of friends, led by Pedro Campos, a former racing partner and current president of the local yacht club, who will be his host for the three days and four nights he stays in the town. It is not a novelty, since King Juan Carlos always stayed at the Campos house the many times he was in Sanxenxo in recent years.

The first appearance of King Juan Carlos is scheduled to take place this Friday, when he attends the first regatta from the yacht club facilities. The intention is for the visit to take place as discreetly as possible and for the occasions on which King Juan Carlos can be seen to be the same as those on which he previously visited Sanxenxo. The king is expected to be accompanied in Sanxenxo by his eldest daughter, the infanta Elena. It so happens that Queen Sofia traveled to Miami (USA) on Tuesday to attend the events organized by the Queen Sophia Spanish Institute for the stopover of the training ship Juan Sebastian Elcano. An activity that the Zarzuela has described as private and that prevents him from being at the time of the arrival in Spain of King Juan Carlos and his transfer to Sanxenxo, but allows him to be in time to see him when he goes to the Zarzuela.

According to the statement from the Royal House, next Monday he will travel to Madrid, where he will meet King Felipe, Queen Sofía and other members of his family at the Palacio de La Zarzuela. The family will share a private lunch and, later, according to the current plans of King Juan Carlos, will return to Abu Dhabi.

At first, the plan contemplated that this meeting between father and son would take place before the weekend. The refusal of the Government, assumed by the Zarzuela, that King Juan Carlos not spend the night in the Zarzuela was even on the verge of frustrating the return operation, given the discomfort of the previous head of state in power, not even that he was as a guest, to use his old private dependencies.
