How to restore mobility in dogs with disabilities: the iPhone LiDAR scanner

Apple has just launched a new campaign on iPhone photography (Shot on iPhone) called The Invincibles (the invincibles), which tells how a company, 3DPets, uses the LiDAR scanner of the apple mobile to scan the body of dogs with some motor disability, which makes it possible to design custom-made prostheses so that the animals can recover mobility.

What's unique about 3DPets is that the LiDAR scanner, together with the iPhone's TrueDepth front-facing camera, makes it possible to design mobility carts and lightweight, ergonomic prosthetics perfectly customized for each animal that are then printed using a 3D printer. Not only for dogs, but also ducks, pigs, goats and turtles, among the examples shown.

Apple has explained in a note some of the stories of animals that have regained mobility through this technology. At the origin of everything is Trip, the mascot of 3DPets. At just 4 months old, he suffered an amputation after being born in an illegal kennel and suffering from multiple congenital anomalies. This dog participated in the company's development process and has had custom-made prostheses ever since. According to the press release, "he spends his days splashing in the water, playing ball or running around with his best friends, Cheetoh the cat and Noony the goat."
