How does the drought affect the salt mountain?

In La Vanguardia's Readers' Photos we see how the lack of water has an impact on the increase in the volume of salt. The stalactites drip less on the stalagmites and this slows down the growth in the Muntanya de Sal de Cardona, in the Bages region.

In the heart of Catalonia and in front of the ancient Cardona castle, the mountain of salt is still located in the saline valley of this town where the consequences of the prolonged drought are also noticeable.

The salt mountain is a unique natural phenomenon in the world and even today it grows as rain erodes it. But, now, we are in a prolonged period of drought and it shows. Its 120 meters are just the tip of an enormous diapir about 2 kilometers deep.

During an hour-long tour, one goes up to 86 meters and enjoys the spectacle of shapes and textures that the salt massif offers in its bowels.

For years, this tourist space that can be visited today became one of the most important potassium salt mines in the world, Mina Nieves de Cardona (from 1929 to 1990).

Today, the old mining site is a great cultural facility that aims to disseminate the importance of salt, the geological exceptionality of the deposit and the use that man has made of this natural resource for centuries.
