The Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, "strongly" condemned Iran's attack against Israel early this Sunday (Spanish time) and called for "an immediate cessation of hostilities."
Tel Aviv, for its part, has called for an urgent meeting of the Security Council "to unequivocally condemn Iran" for its attacks against Israeli territory and the territories it occupies in Palestine and Syria.
Although it is not usual for the UN Security Council to meet on a Sunday, on this occasion it will do so due to the exceptional nature of the situation. The emergency conclave will take place at 10 p.m. in Spanish time.
According to the EFE agency, it is unlikely that the Council will reach any common position given the deep division that exists in all Middle East conflicts. Russia and China - with the right to veto in the Council - count Iran among their allies.
Israeli Ambassador Gilad Erdan said on his X account that this session should also serve to "designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organization."
In a statement in which he explains his request to convene the Council, the ambassador recalls that "the severity and volume of these attacks are unprecedented" and affirms that "Iran poses a direct threat to international peace, which openly violates the charter of UN and Security Council resolutions.
