Girona airport will fly to 37 destinations in a dozen countries during the next summer season, which will start on the last Sunday in March and end at the end of October. It is the same figure as last year.
All the destinations that will be flown to from Girona will be international, except one. Ryanair maintains its commitment to fly to Santiago de Compostela, a route that opened last year coinciding with the Xacobeo Year and that it maintains this season.
Precisely, the director of Girona airport, Vicent Pallarés, assures that Vilobí d'Onyar airport has "a significant market niche" to cover on national routes.
Pallarés recalled that until recently Girona was the only 100% international airport in Spain, which only flew to other countries. "Hopefully someone will notice this market soon; it would be an opportunity for the territory," he stressed.
Pallarés gave as an example destinations such as Seville, Malaga, Bilbao or Madrid that could be attractive for the territory and at the same time profitable for the companies that operate them.
A study that the University of Girona (UdG) made public a few weeks ago denoted that the Girona aerodrome was "underused" by the population of the territory.
A fact that, according to Pallarès, could be reversed with the incorporation of new routes. This is the strategic table with representation from the Generalitat, the Girona Provincial Council, the Chamber of Commerce and fifteen tourist municipalities on the Costa Brava and the Maresme that are working to attract new companies and routes.
"We have contacted companies and institutions so that they work together, there are open negotiations," Pallarés said this morning. If successful, the new airlines or routes would not operate until the 2024 season.
Currently, the low cost company Ryanair continues to be the hegemonic company in Girona since it concentrates 70% of the flights. They are followed by Jet 2, with 7% and Transavia, with 4.8%.
The forecast of the airport director is that this year the volume of passengers will increase between 12 and 15% in relation to last season, when 1.3 million passengers used the Vilobí d'Onyar facilities. The figure, however, will still not exceed those of 2019, which closed with about 2 million.
