Giró transfers to Guindos the Government's intention to create a public bank

The Minister of Economy, Jaume Giró, met this Thursday in Frankfurt with the Vice President of the European Central Bank (ECB), Luis de Guindos. At the meeting, in addition to analyzing the current macroeconomic context and growth forecasts, both for the euro zone as a whole and for Catalonia, the minister conveyed to Guindos the Government's intention to set up a Catalan public bank, as well as the different ways which the Generalitat works to make it viable.

A few months ago, the Bank of Spain denied the Generalitat the possibility of setting up a public bank, something it has been demanding for years. Giró referred to Guindos about the "Government's determination to make a public bank of the 21st century in Catalonia", according to a statement from the Department of Economy.

In relation to the macroeconomic framework, the Minister and the Vice President of the ECB discussed the current and medium-term economic consequences of the war in Ukraine, especially in relation to the increase in the prices of energy and some raw materials, and on the “ worrying evolution of inflation.

Guindos and Giró also commented on the forecasts of the body in charge of European monetary policy regarding the evolution of interest rates, as well as the consequences of the ECB's decision to stop buying bonds from the summer.
