Feijóo asks the Government for a 4% reduction in VAT on basic foods

That the Ministry of Finance lower the VAT on basic food to 4%. It is the proposal that the president of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, insisted on this Saturday, given the constant increase in the price of products. The leader of the main opposition party is betting on a temporary reduction in the tax to combat a "price increase of 14.4%", above the statistical CPI.

Feijóo is committed to a partial VAT reduction on meat, fish, bottled water, pasta and preserves. A reduction that would serve "to send a message of social commitment" to families who see how the shopping basket has become more expensive, he defended during his speech at the XIII National Congress of Large Families held in Santiago de Compostela.

This temporary reduction of VAT to 4% should be accompanied, Feijóo has once again proposed, by a deflation of personal income tax for medium and low incomes "to alleviate the fiscal pressure they suffer." The Government has ruled out both measures, both the reduction of VAT, despite the fiscal margin it has and which it has reserved to extend the social shield that expires on December 31, as well as the deflation of the rate, which has not been updated since 2008. The leader of the PP has recalled that inflation has risen more than 27% in the last 14 years.

Feijóo has also affirmed that the increase in the shopping basket has been a "setback for family economies", especially for the numerous ones. He has exposed in the congress that seven out of ten of these families have difficulties to make ends meet and about half live with less than 2,500 euros per month.

The PP, its leader has defended, has an "unequivocal commitment" to families, highlighting that with the PP governments teleworking was regulated for the first time, the reduction of working hours for fathers and mothers with children up to 12 years was extended and approved the Comprehensive Family Support Plan. "These have been relevant measures, but there is still a long way to go," he stated at a time when the Government is about to approve the family law agreed together with next year's budget in the Council of Ministers.

The president of the PP has also proposed maintaining the large family card for fathers and mothers until retirement age. "It's fair because they have made a tremendous effort," he defended. And he has proposed keeping the title of large family until the last of the children turns 26 because "it is fair that families do not lose the social benefits available to them."

The PP has promised that from the fourth child large families will be recognized as a special category and has opted to reduce VAT for the purchase of vehicles destined for them from 21 to 10%.
