Expectation for the Mercadona results of 2022 that Juan Roig will announce tomorrow

For more than two decades, each year, around the time of the Cremà de las Fallas in Valencia, Juan Roig has held a press conference in which he announces Mercadona's results for the year that ended: turnover, benefits, job creation , etc. An appointment that always arouses great interest due to the magnitude of a leading company in the supermarket sector in Spain with close to 1,700 stores and almost 100,000 workers, which has begun to penetrate Portugal with force and has never ruled out making the leap to other European geographies.

But this year's, which will be held tomorrow, has generated great expectations due to the context in which it takes place. For weeks, some institutions and political parties have been requesting an agreement with distributors to agree on an "anti-inflation shopping basket" as has been done in France. In fact, last week, Ximo Puig announced that he had started talks to establish a possible "consumption bonus" to make purchases cheaper for the most needy families.

But these lawsuits have not all been pink gloves. In the case of Podemos and its leaders, the demand has been more a requirement to "cap" the prices of the products sold in supermarkets. And in the specific case of Juan Roig, they have not spared attacks on the president of Mercadona, whom they have come to describe, among others, as a "ruthless capitalist". The aggressive tone of the leaders of Podemos, among others of the Valencian vice president Héctor Illueca, has not been shared by the PSPV or Compromís.

The press conference will announce the turnover and the profit margin obtained. This is one of the issues that may be the subject of controversy, since Podemos has accused Mercadona of "getting rich by raising the prices of products." The distribution leader in Spain, with a market share of 25.4% according to Kantar, entered 27,819 million euros in 2021 and earned 680 million euros. That year it had contained prices more than 3.5 points below the CPI, which meant a drop in its margin, with a 6% drop in net profit.
