Esther Vaquero: "Qatar will be Qatar again when it's all over"

Every night the voice and image of Esther Vaquero, the journalist and presenter of the Antena 3 news, enter the homes of millions of viewers. The news program that she presents together with Vicente Vallés is the indisputable audience leader.

What does a World Cup in Qatar in December suggest to you?

It's the world upside down. Everything has been reconfigured. We have changed the terraces and the beer for the houses or for the writing, the coffees and the keys of the computer.

It is understood?

It is a matter of money and image laundering. The soccer World Cup is the most important sporting event along with the Olympic Games and letting a country that does not respect human rights hang the medal... is at least worthy of reflection.

You were part of the current affairs and research team at Espejo público. What would you research if you were in Qatar?

It is a country where there are many inequalities at an economic and social level between men and women. I would try to reflect it.

Is it a mirage to think that football can change things?

I am little optimistic. Qatar will probably be Qatar again when it's all over. Both will look at their navels and think about how well they have done and not about what they should change.

And journalism?

If it weren't for journalism, nothing would have been talked about. We cannot change things because then we would be talking about politics. But we do have to inform and denounce, something really complicated because inertia leads to the fact that when the ball starts rolling we forget that it is being played in Qatar. And human rights are swept under the rug.
