Esther Giménez-Salinas, elected new Ombudsman by Parliament

The Parliament of Catalonia has voted in favor of Esther Giménez-Salinas as the new Síndica de Greuges, replacing Rafael Ribó, whose mandate had expired three years ago.

Esther Giménez-Salinas, elected new Ombudsman by Parliament

The Parliament of Catalonia has voted in favor of Esther Giménez-Salinas as the new Síndica de Greuges, replacing Rafael Ribó, whose mandate had expired three years ago.

The plenary session of the Catalan Chamber of Deputies has supported the election of Ginémez-Salinas under the agreement reached at the end of the year between PSC, ERC and Junts to renew the positions dependent on the Parlament, including the Corporació Catalana de Mitjans Audiovisuals ( CCMA), the Audiovisual Council of Catalonia (CAC), the Council of Statutory Guarantees, the Commission for the Guarantee of the Right of Access to Public Information or the Audit Office, among others. Thus, the vote - secret - has been settled with 91 votes in favor and 39 against.

Giménez-Salinas's proposal to assume the position, agreed by the three groups, will allow the former rector of the Ramon Llull University and former member of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) to be the fourth president to lead the institution created in 1984, the first woman.

Giménez-Salinas replaces Ribó, who has held the position for 18 years, almost as long as his two predecessors: Frederic Rahola (1984-1992) and Anton Cañellas (1993-2004), but she will have a 6-year mandate, and will not may be re-elected, after the last legal modification.

The new head of the Sindicatura de Greuges has passed the mandatory parliamentary procedure. Before the vote, his time at the Greuges Sindicatura Commission, on June 21, where he advocated the pact as a symbol of the new political stage and placed restorative justice as one of the axes of his mandate, along with the protection of children or the revision of the penitentiary system.

Following this Thursday's vote, the President of the Parliament, Laura Borràs, will have to proclaim the election of Giménez-Salinas, communicate it to the President of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès, and order its publication in the Official Gazette of the Parliament of (BOPC), in the Official Gazette of the Generalitat (DOGC), and the new Catalan Ombudsman must take office before the Bureau of the Parlament.
