ERC and Junts point out the responsibility of the Government in the Pegasus case before the European Parliament

Junts and Esquerra MEPs have targeted the Spanish government for the Catalangate and have questioned the legality of these actions before the European Parliament. In the investigation commission on espionage with Pegasus, held this morning, Carles Puigdemont and Toni Comín (Junts) and Diana Riba and Jordi Solé (ERC) used the Citizen Lab report to denounce the role of the Spanish State , which they have described as a "scandal".

"It is an interference of extreme gravity," said the former president of the Generalitat, who has denounced that he was spied on while preparing to go to the Court of Justice of the European Union on the issue of immunity. Puigdemont has stressed that his political role "is not linked to any criminal case." Toni Comín, also from Junts, has assured that only the Spanish government, and no other government, may have an interest in spying on the independence movement. In addition, he has complained about the lack of transparency in the case due to the Official Secrets Act.

Diana Riba, from ERC, has also emphasized this issue, arguing that "we have not seen the court orders". The Republican MEP has asked the European Parliament to send a mission to Spain and investigate the facts. Jordi Solé, the second member of Esquerra in the European Parliament, has questioned whether the espionage was carried out in the name of national security. “I am a representative of the people who voted for us and of a democratic ideology”, he has asserted, in addition to denying that he and his companions pose a “threat”.

The representatives of PP, PSOE and Cs have also participated in the debate, in which there have been moments of tension. The popular and former Minister of the Interior Juan Ignacio Zoido has reproached the independence leaders for playing "victims", while the socialist Ibán García del Blanco has assured that in Spain "ideas are not persecuted, but crimes". Jordi Cañas, from Cs, has distrusted the veracity of the Citizen Lab report.
