EPA: the unemployment rate picks up slightly in Catalonia, to 9.91%

Unemployment in Catalonia has increased by 21,900 people during the last quarter of 2022 and the unemployment rate has increased to 9.91%, compared to 9.31% in the third quarter of the year, according to data from the Population Survey Activa (EPA) published this Thursday.

With three points less than the national average data, unemployment is the lowest figure in this period since 2007. Since the peak of the covid crisis, the unemployment rate has fallen by more than 3, 96 points. Thus, the total number of unemployed reaches 387,200.

Catalonia is the second autonomous community where unemployment has risen the most in absolute numbers between October and December, with the Balearic Islands leading the way (29,700 more unemployed), and followed by the Community of Madrid, with 10,600 more.

On the other hand, the number of employed in Catalonia reached 3.52 million, 1.15% less than in the previous quarter, destroying 40,900 jobs. Autonomy has reached the end of December at a labor level that had not been reached since the highs of 2008, when it exceeded 3.6 million workers, and in the Christmas period since 2007.

By provinces, in Barcelona the unemployment rate reached 10.15%, in Tarragona 9.81%, in Lleida 9.47% and in Girona 8.54%. Barcelona is the only one that has seen its rate rise since the end of 2021 (it was 9.60%). In any case, it is the one that brings together the bulk of employment, with 2.6 million employees.
