The museums and municipal exhibition centers of Barcelona received a total of 3.6 million visitors in 2022, which represents "a clear recovery" compared to the pandemic years, although it is still far from the 4.8 million of the year 2019. The Museu Picasso, with 794,806 people, was the most visited, according to data provided by the Barcelona Institute of Culture (ICUB).
Next is El Born Center for Culture and Memory, with 728,800, and Montjuïc Castle, with 589,200. 616,000 people passed through the different locations of the Barcelona History Museum, and another 321,000 through those of the Natural Sciences Museum (including the Historical Botanic Garden).
The 794,806 visitors to the Museu Picasso represent a growth of 167% compared to 2021, although the million visitors registered in 2019 have not yet been reached, “an extraordinary year for the institution”. Regarding the nationality of the visitors, the North American public has represented almost 20% of the total, so that it is "the nationality that has visited the museum the most, as had already happened in 2019 (23%), and difference from the last two years” pandemics.
North American visitors are followed by Spaniards, who represent almost 15% of the total, with Barcelonans visiting the museum the most (more than 12% of the total), followed by the public of French nationality (around 9 %) and that of Italian nationality, which is also almost 9%.
The Brigitte Baer exhibitions. Picasso and the engravings and Picasso/Clerque received a total of 327,488 visitors. The last exhibition of the year, Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler. Art dealer and publisher, opened on December 1, has since then had 34,348 visitors, closing the last month of 2022 as the month with the most visitors in recent years.
On the other hand, in La Virreina Center de la Imatge, the exhibitions Margarite Duras and Oriol Vilapuig. Imágenes vácias, have had a total of 55,775 visitors, and Alimentar Barcelona, 1921. Towards the metropolitan city, in the Saló del Tinell, had another 47,495 people, while Èlia Llach, in the Virreina Center de la Imatge, was seen by 31,192 people Banksy. The art of protest, at the Design Hub Barcelona (DHUB), attracted 31,060.
Another outstanding aspect of 2022 is that "one in four visitors is a local public", while in 2019 "the percentage of Barcelonans who visited the city's museums did not reach 15%".
In addition to those already mentioned, the ICUB has announced that the Royal Monastery of Santa Maria de Pedralbes had 79,500 visitors; the Ethnological and World Culture Museum (MUEC) had 75,700; 64,400 were from the MUEC Montcada; 11,300 from the MUEC Parque Montjuïc; 101,800 the DHUB, and the Design Museum 129,400.
On the other hand, in Glòries there were 127,600 visitors; Casa Bloc has counted with 1,800; 48,400 went to the Frederic Marès Museum; 343,000 in Park Güell; 38,700 at the Museo de la Música and 79,900 at other venues.
Regarding the exhibition centers, the calculations are that 108,000 people attended La Virreina Center de la Imatge; to La Capella, 58,700; 9,800 to Fabra i Coats and 17,100 to the Photographic Archive of Barcelona.
