Officer was shot and killed in the head. He was rushed to hospital. In a briefing, Chief James White of Detroit Police stated that the officer who died was a five year veteran, whose father also served in the police department.

According to police, the suspect was also unidentified and died from gunshot wounds.

White stated that the suspect "took on fire as well, and was also shot, after he shot out at our officer."

It was not clear what the exact circumstances of the shooting were. White stated that there were no other injuries.

In a statement, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan stated that the senseless violence inflicting our country is too close to home. We owe a debt to our fallen officer that we cannot repay. He gave his life for his city and to keep his fellow Detroiters safe. We hold his family close tonight and will continue to be there for them in these difficult days.
