Deaths related to Hurricane Fiona in Puerto Rico rise to 30

Deaths related to the passage of Hurricane Fiona through Puerto Rico increased to 30, although half of them are still under investigation to establish their link to the cyclone, according to the latest report from the Department of Health.

The report details that those who have died today -confirmed and under investigation- are 19 men and 11 women, most of them over 65 years of age.

The 15 confirmed deaths to date are divided into two direct deaths and 13 indirect ones.

The direct deaths correspond to two men who drowned in the La Plata river, being dragged by the flood caused by the cyclone's rains.

Among the indirect cases there are several who died of electrocution or carbon monoxide inhalation when they had to use electric generators in their homes due to the general blackout caused by Fiona.

There are also people who died due to not being able to receive medical care in time due to difficulties in getting to hospitals, as many roads were made impassable by floods, landslides and falling trees.

Fiona, a category 1 hurricane, hit southwestern Puerto Rico on September 18, causing catastrophic damage to the island, which led the federal government to declare a state of major disaster.
