Sergi Darder, trained in the lower categories of Espanyol and player of the first team since 2017, is officially the new blue and white captain from this Tuesday. The Mallorcan, who already wore the bracelet in the defeat (2-1) this past weekend at Anoeta, leads a quartet of captains completed by Sergi Gómez, Joselu and Leandro Cabrera.
The Uruguayan central defender is the only one who had already had this honor the previous two seasons. For his part, Sergi Gómez, who signed for the parakeet entity last season, is the second captain and the newcomer Joselu is the third. As usual, the four players have been chosen through a vote by the members of the squad.
In addition to the Montevideo player, the previous season the captains were David López, Diego López and Adrián Embarba, but they have all left Espanyol this summer. The goalkeeper, now a Rayo Vallecano player, and the youth squad, currently in the Girona ranks, finished their contract and it was not renewed, while the winger asked to leave and signed for Almería.
Cabrera wore the bracelet the first games of the season, but against Real Sociedad Darder took over. The midfielder is the player in the squad who has spent the most years defending the blue and white colours, since he arrived six seasons ago from Olympique de Lyon, first on loan and then on property after paying 8 million.
Darder's commitment to Espanyol is amply proven, especially after his renewal just a few weeks ago until 2026. "Nowhere will I be happier and I hope I can be not only these four years, but all my life. To leave they have me to kill," said the one from Artá after expanding the link with what he considers his "home".
In addition to the sentimental aspect, Darder has been and is one of the key pieces of the team, probably the most talented player in the parakeet team. The Spaniard has played every minute in the six games that Espanyol has played this season and his leadership both on the field and in the locker room seem fundamental for the future of the team in a season that has not started in the best way .
His performance in his journey as a blue and white has even caused his game and his attitude to be baptized with the concept 'Darderism'. "Go to win every game and have the ambition to win it.
