Cyprus police arrest 4 people after small explosion near Israeli embassy

Cyprus police reported this Saturday the arrest of four people suspected of detonating a small explosive device that caused no damage near the Israeli embassy in Nicosia, the country's capital.

The four suspects, aged between 17 and 21, face charges of attempted destruction of property with explosives, possession and use of explosives and possession of a knife, police said.

Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the explosion, which occurred about 30 meters from the Israeli embassy, was related to the war in Gaza. In the European Union, security has been reinforced following the incursion of Hamas insurgents into Israel on October 7 and the subsequent hostilities.

The detainees will appear in a Nicosia court later in the day for a hearing to decide the length of their detention until investigators can formally file charges against them, or their release.

According to police, two of the suspects were seen walking near the scene of the incident, while the other two were sitting in a car parked in a nearby alley. Two knives and a hammer were also found inside the vehicle.
