CUP and Commons leave ERC in the minority in the government of Arenys de Mar

The unilateral decision of the mayor of the ERC of Arenys de Mar, Annabel Moreno, to withdraw the powers in matters of Public Roads from Ona Curto, one of the two councilors of the CUP, has caused the breaking of the government pact that they maintained with the anti-system formation and Arenys de Comú. The decision has been taken after public criticism has intensified for the poor street cleaning service and the delay in the new contract.

The municipal government of Arenys de Mar, chaired by the Republican Annabel Moreno, has been in the minority since last August 9. The CUP decided to break the municipal government pact that it had with ERC and Arenys en Comú once Moreno decided, according to the government partners, "unilaterally" to recover the competences in Municipal and Environmental Services managed by Ona Curto, CUP spokesperson. Through a statement, the anti-system accused the Republicans of a "treasonous electoral maneuver" for which they decided to go to the opposition.

The CUP was followed by the councilor from Arenys en Comú, Josep Antoni López. The assembly of the political formation criticized the "unilateral" decision of ERC for which they are accused of "breach of the 2019 government pact" and are forced to leave the government, with which the Republicans remain in the minority of six councillors. The commons criticize that "all possible mediation and dialogue channels had not been exhausted" for what they consider the "electoralist" decision.

The borderline situation that Arenys de Mar is experiencing with the street cleaning service is one of the main criticisms from citizens. The management of the councilwoman from Cupera in this area is one of the most discussed and criticized, as shown by a survey by the Diputació in which 58% of Arenyenses criticize the dirt, for which reason, in an unusual political decision, Annabel Moreno has decided to assume the competences in these matters.

Less than a year before the next municipal elections, none of the political parties represented in the Arenys de Mar City Council ventures to lead a motion of censure to expel the six Republican councilors from the government. Only the PSC, led by Jordi Muñiz, assures that it will help maintain governability from the opposition, through specific agreements on key issues. Even so, they are aware that the new cleaning contract, another of the keys to the supposed mismanagement of the Cupera, will not be approved this legislature and the "door-to-door" garbage collection service remains up in the air.
