Completed cycle path that connects Girona with Vilablareix

The works on the Plaza de Salt, the roundabout located in the Mas Xirgu industrial estate in Girona, have been completed and the new bike lane that connects with Vilablareix has already been launched. The project consisted of reducing the central space of the roundabout and thus expanding the sidewalk space and integrating a two-way cycle lane.

In addition, Girona City Council has completed the installation of a Girocleta stop that will be put into operation throughout 2024. The new bike lane is 1.5 km long and connects the section from Oviedo Street to the entrance to Vilablareix. , with a route parallel to the Santa Coloma highway. The cost of the project was 1.44 million euros and was financed by Next Generation.

As of this Monday, Vilablareix and Girona are already connected by a bike lane that runs parallel to the Santa Coloma road, crosses the Mas Xirgu industrial estate and connects with Oviedo street in the capital of Girona. This is one of the city's star projects that began in the previous term and has represented one of the most important investments of the Next Generation funds in the city. The new bike lane project adds 1.5 km to the cycle network and today there are already 45.08 km throughout Girona.

Within this section, there are 208 meters on Calle del Río Güell between Can Pau Birol and up to Plaza de Salt. There are also 249 meters of the Plaza de Salt roundabout and the longest section is the 1,051 meters that is the part that connects the roundabout with Vilablareix, following the Santa Coloma road.

The project has caused Salt Square to reduce the diameter of the central area of the roundabout, going from 60 to 35 meters. It is a similar size to other roundabouts that already exist in the city. The change has made it possible to gain enough meters to maintain two lanes for vehicles inside the roundabout and widen the sidewalks. In addition, a two-way cycle lane has also been created that runs along the outside of the rotary. This allows the traffic absorption capacity of this roundabout to remain unchanged, which becomes one of the entrances to the city.

In addition, there is a strip of green area between the vehicle and bicycle lanes, which has a width of 2.5 meters. The sidewalk is 5 meters wide and 1 meter apart from the bicycle lane. The renovation of the square has also meant an improvement in lighting and expanding the green areas. In addition, a Girocleta stop has been installed that will be operational at the beginning of 2024 in front of one of the supermarkets in the area. The works had a cost of 1.44 million euros, financed by Next Generation funds, and executed by the company Rubau Tarrés SL.
