Ciudadanos rejects the idea raised by Feijóo and rules out going hand in hand with the PP in Catalonia

After the unsuccessful attempts of Carlos Carrizosa to articulate a constitutionalist platform to run in the last elections to the Parliament, to which the PSC turned a deaf ear and the popular Catalans resisted until it was discarded, the idea of the president of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, to "see what possibility" exists to "build" that space has not been liked by the regional executive of Citizens.

Sources from the leadership of the party in Catalonia, who assure that since Genoa they have not spoken with them, flatly reject this possibility, raised by Feijóo in an interview in El Mundo on Sunday, because they are not willing to alter the candidacies of Ciudadanos, " clean and independent", as indicated, to become a "PP franchise" or a "Frankenstein coalition with Valents and Vox".

If Feijóo has launched this idea, it is because in a certain way he assumes his "weakness" in Catalonia, points out a member of the Catalan executive, who recalls that the thesis of an always "peaceful" relationship between Ciudadanos and the PP is illusory, since there are many members of the party who would prefer a rapprochement with the PSC and the PP inspire a strong rejection in them. In addition, he points out, the unit does not have "thaumaturgical properties": going together is not always better than going apart.

Even so, this source points out, the debate has not been raised within Ciudadanos, they have not received any offer, nor has there been any dialogue with emissaries of the PP, so it is highly unlikely that this process will take place in the short term. integration. The current political scenario is "very volatile", he acknowledges, and Feijóo may be expressing his wish that Inés Arrimadas's party does not pass the re-founding process and is left "dismasted" due to the confrontation between the president and her spokesperson in Congress. , Edmundo Bal.

Another of the sources consulted is more vehement, which attributes Feijóo's "probe balloon" to his "intrigues" in Madrid and recalls that the leader of the PP has already made calls for Ciudadanos to "shut down", for which his Claims can be part of a "harass and shoot down" strategy. But things in Catalonia are different: "Here the conditions have never been met to go together," says this source, who regrets that "because of these things" there is currently no joint candidacy for the January congress, in which that Bal and Arrimadas will compete for the leadership of Ciudadanos.

In the executive of the Catalan PP, however, they consider the criteria communicated by Feijóo "correct", which "preserve" the initials of the PP "expanding space". However, these sources point out, it is an idea that "is being studied" and to date nothing has materialized. The popular Catalans have always insisted that they would not "dilute" their brand in any alliance and that, in any case, they would try to join forces with their own project.

Thus, the reissue in Catalonia of the Navarra Suma formula, in which the PP agreed with the Unión del Pueblo Navarro (UPN) for the disappearance of its initials in the Foral Community, to constitute a platform in which Ciudadanos was also later integrated , is ruled out not only by the orange dome but also by the popular Catalans themselves.

In fact, sources from the Catalan PP recall, Feijóo himself has already announced the end of Navarra Suma and that he will seek other channels of dialogue with UPN. In this sense, they say, what the president of the PP proposes for Catalonia is a mere "reflection" and, in any case, this possible confluence will not bear fruit, as they believe, before the municipal ones, after which "some parties probably already do not exist".

"We must go towards the Catalan constitutionalist project, it is an orphaned space at this time that the PSC has abandoned, it needs a political reference and I am in a position to build it with all the generosity," Feijóo said in the interview, but, his co-religionists warn Catalans, also added that "the first to raise it" are their colleagues in Catalonia.
