Catalonia starts the week with alerts for storms, hail and rain

The week starts with showers and storms, which will be stronger and more intense in the Pyrenean environment of Aragon and Catalonia, where yellow and orange alerts have been activated starting at noon, according to the forecast by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).

Today the agency has activated notices in the four Catalan provinces and in another seven Spanish provinces. Specifically, Teruel, Barcelona, Girona and Castellón will be at significant risk (orange) due to rain and storms, which will affect Zaragoza, Soria, Guadalajara, Lleida, Tarragona, La Rioja and Valencia with a yellow alert.

The showers seem guaranteed in the Pyrenean environment and north of Catalonia. In the pre-Pyrenees and in the central depression of Barcelona, an accumulated precipitation of up to 40 mm in one hour is expected. These storms may be accompanied by large hail and very strong gusts of wind, according to the Aemet forecast.

In the Pyrenees and in the pre-coastal area of Girona, the orange warning has been activated for storms that will drop up to 40 mm in one hour and that may also be accompanied by large hail and very strong gusts of wind.

The Aemet also does not rule out storms in the province of Lleida and Tarragona, where they may be accompanied by hail and very strong gusts of wind. In both, the yellow notice has also been activated. The alert will begin at 2:00 p.m. and end at 11:59 p.m. on Monday.

Regarding temperatures, no major changes are expected: up to 30 degrees maximum in Tarragona; 29 in Barcelona and Girona; and up to 35 in Lleida.

Catalonia said goodbye to the month of June with storms, which caused 19,336 lightning strikes in Catalan territory, according to the network of lightning detectors of the Meteorological Service of Catalonia (XDDE).

Last week's storms left more than 134 liters of water per square meter in Sant Salvador de Guardiola (Barcelona), 67 in Vacarisses (Barcelona) and 63 in El Pont de Suert (Lleida), the three locations where it has rained the most during the last episode.
