Car sales fall 3% in 2022 due to inflation and rising costs

Worrying year for the Spanish automobile market. 2022 will close with 830,000 registered units, which represents a 3% drop compared to last year and a 34% drop compared to the year prior to the pandemic. The Spanish Association of Automobile and Truck Manufacturers (Anfac) warned yesterday that inflation, the increase in energy costs and raw materials and the microchip crisis have caused this drop in sales volume. All this causes uncertainty and registrations are retracted.

The Spanish factories have indeed produced more units. Specifically, the employers expect that by the end of the year around 2.2 million vehicles will have left national industrial facilities, which represents a slight decrease compared to almost 2.1 million in 2021.

Where there is special concern is in the sales of electrified passenger cars, which will close 2022 at a much lower rate than planned. The Government set a goal of registering 120,000 units, but as of December 31, 80,000 will barely be reached. This, added to the delay in deploying the charging points (there are 16,565 throughout Spain, well below the 45,000 that should be operational this year) postpones the objectives to electrify the car park.

Clarifying the aid for the second disbursement of the Perte of the electric and connected vehicle, with more flexible terms for the investments of the brands, and a deployment of the charging stations at a higher speed are some of the demands that Anfac will take to the next meeting with the Government, next December 20
