Cambrils pays tribute normally to the victims of the jihadist attack

Cambrils has paid this Thursday an emotional tribute to the victims of the terrorist attacks of August 17, 2017 in Barcelona and, a day later, in the town of Tarragona, in an act held in front of the Memorial for Peace installed in front of the Yacht Club where jihadists attacked.

The homage has been carried out with a profoundly intimate character and, unlike the one held yesterday on the Ramblas in Barcelona, it has passed normally. Relatives of the victims have attended, as well as the mayors of Cambrils, Oliver Klein, of Ripoll (Girona), Jordi Munell, and of Alcanar (Tarragona), Joan Roig.

They have also participated, among other authorities, the representative of the Government in Catalonia, Maria Eugènia Gay; the president of the Cortes of Aragon, José Javier Sada; the Minister of Equality and Feminism of the Generalitat, Tània Verge, and the Minister of Health of the Government of Aragon, Sira Repollés.

In addition to the large institutional presence, the tribute has also had representatives of the toilets, firefighters, the Cambrils Local Police, the Mossos d'Esquadra, the National Police and the Civil Guard.

After an offering of white roses in front of the Peace Memorial installed in front of the Club Nàutic, the mayor of Cambrils delivered, on behalf of all the attendees, a brief and emotional speech in which he underlined "a message of peace". "Cambrils is a city of light and, five years ago, darkness came to us", he has described on this day of support and tribute to the victims in their "shared pain".

Klein, who the day before had asked not to repeat yesterday's incidents in Barcelona - a pro-independence group interrupted the minute of silence - has reiterated the commitment of the municipality and the citizens to give a "message of peace" that "must prevail over resentment and pain" to "prevent hatred, terrorism and war".

The Memorial for Peace stands at the point where, five years ago, a car with five terrorists attacked a Mossos d'Esquadra patrol. Before being shot down, the terrorists caused the death of Ana María Suárez, 67, from Zaragoza, and six injuries of different considerations were recorded.

In the commemorative act of this Jew, after the floral offering, cellists Olga Prats and Jesús Valls performed El Cant dels Ocells, the anthem for peace by Pau Casals.
