Bob Dylan apologizes for offering autographed books but he signed a machine

A few decades ago, the filmmaker Billy Wilder made it more than clear: "No one is perfect." It is not even Bob Dylan, the legendary singer-songwriter who with his lyrics obtained the great achievement in 2016 of becoming a Nobel Prize in Literature.

Dylan has been forced to apologize "for his misjudgment" amid controversy over using a machine to autograph copies of his new book. The publicity ensured that he would have a hand-drawn signature, no duplicates.

This volume, entitled The philosophy of modern song, presents the mythical singer-songwriter's comments on songs by other artists. It was launched earlier this month in a limited edition of 900 copies signed by the author. Each sold for $599. All the books were delivered with a letter of authenticity from the publisher Simon

Once the buyers had the copies and with the complicity of social networks, they began to spread photos of their treasure. It did not go unnoticed that, when compared, all the autographs were identically the same, something impossible if done by hand. The matter goes further. Dylan, at 81, acknowledged that he always signed by hand, but confessed that the fraud started in 2019, when he was affected by vertigo.

“It continued with the pandemic,” he added. "I got a team of five people, working in lockdown, to help me with the signatures, but we couldn't find a safe and effective way to complete what I needed with the virus around," she clarified.

So, during the health crisis, "it was impossible to sign anything and the vertigo did not help," he insisted. Given the delivery dates, they suggested the idea of using a machine and, furthermore, with the justification that this is a type of thing that has been done 'all the time' in art and literature, ”he defended himself.

"Using a machine was an error in judgment and I want to rectify it immediately," he stressed. Along these lines, he assured that he is already working with the publisher and its gallery partners (the automatic signature was also used on his paintings) to make the amendment. simon
