Biden takes a crowd bath by signing the law that protects same-sex marriages

President Joe Biden gave himself a crowd bath this Tuesday by signing legislation that protects same-sex marriages that Congress approved, the first time in history that this recognition has occurred.

“This law and the love it stands for strike a blow against hate in all its forms,” Biden stressed. "That's why this law matters to each and every American," he insisted. It happens that in the country of Fox they did not listen to his words because the channel that brings together the right did not offer them live. There they summon the voices, like those of Trumpism, who are against it.

The legislation passed in the Senate with the support of 12 conservative senators, while 39 in the lower house joined the Democrats. So legislators from the parties, along with the first lady, Jill Biden, and Vice President Kamala Harris, along with her husband, were among the 2,000 guests at the White House garden party. Singers Sam Smith and Ciny Lauper performed at the event.

Biden has been one of the main promoters of this law. His advisers assured that it is something personal for him. The law is not an imposition. Each state will adopt it or not, but in no case may they deny that union made in another territory.

"The road to reach this moment has been long, but those of you who believe in equality and justice have never stopped fighting, many of you who are here now," he said in his speech. "Many of you put your relationships on the front line, your work, your lives to fight for the law that I now sign," he stressed.

"Deciding if you marry, who you marry, is one of the most profound decisions that a person can make," he added.

Same-sex marriages have been legal nationwide since the Supreme Court's ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges. The debate was revived last summer when the Supreme Court overturned the ruling that had legalized abortion after ultra-conservative Justice Clarence Thomas suggested in his opinion that the court should also reconsider the ruling that had given value to same-sex marriages.

This encouraged a response that seemed impossible to reach any legal port. But the work of conservative lobbies made it easier for there to be a sufficient number of legislators in the Senate to support him. This regulation rejects the 1996 defense of marriage law, which established that the union could only be between a man and a woman.

At the celebration, Biden and the speaker of the lower house, Nancy Pelosi, pointed out that the next step is the equality law. “When a person can get married in the morning and be thrown out of a restaurant for being gay in the afternoon, this is still wrong,” Biden stressed.

He reiterated that it is not acceptable when hospitals, bookstores or community centers are threatened and intimidated because they support LGBTQ children and families. “We must speak loud and strong, stop the hate and the violence,” she remarked. And he remembered the recent shooting at Club Q in Colorado Springs, with five dead. It was not forgotten that the legislation on same-sex marriages was passed on the same day that Brittney Griner was released in Russia, and that he had his first conversation with her from the Oval Room, in the company of the wife of the basketball player, Cherelle Griner.
