Besalú face down in the river Fluvià

In La Vanguardia's Readers' Photos we can see part of the town of Besalú, in La Garrotxa, reflected on the Fluvià river, as if it were upside down and offered us a different perspective.

The origin of this medieval town was the Besalú castle, which is already documented in the 10th century, built on top of a hill, where the remains of the canonical church of Santa María are located, in the Early Middle Ages.

The river plays an important role in this population as a whole. And the presence of the Romanesque bridge stands out, of which there has been news since the year 1075.

The bridge has an angular shape with seven unequal arches (the first is included within the sector corresponding to the walled enclosure), which are located on top of pillars, many of them based on live rock, with cutwaters.

At the end of the first section, between the fourth and fifth arches, there is a widening of the road and later, between the sixth and seventh, there is another. The fortified access portal is superimposed on the first pillar of the bridge.

Besalú currently reveals an architectural and urban structure quite coherent with its medieval past. In 1966 it was declared a Historic-Artistic Site for its great architectural value.
