Barcelona promotes actions to increase the use of Catalan among young people

The latest surveys on language use by the population carried out by the Institut d'Estadística de Catalunya reveal a decrease in the use of Catalan in the city of Barcelona, especially among young people and in all the municipal services that work with the public with the citizenship. This is a significant decrease that is accentuated over the years.

The 2018 Survey of Linguistic Uses of the Population and the 2021 Joventut Survey show that more than half of the population does not use Catalan on a regular basis. 26% say they never use it and 27% do so very sporadically.

The City Council, in order to reverse the situation, has launched an action plan to further promote the language of Rodoreda. In this way, Catalan courses will be launched in Barcelona companies, projects will be carried out with influencers in secondary schools, Jocs Florals will be held in digital format with the involvement of Betevé and the cinematographic projection in Catalan will be increased , both in the city's movie theaters and at festivals.

In the health sector, a series of measures will also be taken to contribute to the use of Catalan. Foreign doctors who start working in Barcelona will have to take a course in this language, in order to communicate with patients.

This series of actions are approved through a municipal measure for the promotion of Catalan, with the collaboration of the Generalitat de Catalunya, which involves the contribution of Barcelona City Council to the National Pact for the Language. A proposal that also has the support of a group of experts, including Enric Gomà, Rudolf Ortega, Teresa Cabré, Míriam Hatibi, Jordi Font, Eduard Voltas and Custodia Moreno, who work at the same time with municipal officials and other institutions.
