Badalona closes the central library of Can Casacuberta again

During the month of September, the Badalona City Council (Barcelonès Nord) will commission a project to completely renovate the Can Casacuberta Urban Central Library. The municipal government has prioritized this decision after a new incident in the air conditioning forces the main library in the city center to temporarily close.

The facility had to close in January 2019 due to a series of deficiencies in air conditioning that prevented it from being kept open. During this time, a great social movement was generated from the Can Casacuberta Platform until it reopened on February 13.

During the last few days, the maintenance service for municipal buildings detected that a part of the library's refrigerating machine had broken down and to solve it, the process of supplying a spare part began. It is expected that the incident can be solved in a few days to be able to reopen the equipment in the right conditions during the coming weeks, according to the municipal government.

Given the high temperatures, the municipal executive has decided to temporarily close Can Casacuberta (the only library in the city that opens in August) and transfer all the activity carried out in this facility to the Canyadó and Casagemes-Joan Argenté Library, which until August 31 will open from Monday to Friday between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. On Saturdays the equipment will remain closed.

The mayor of Badalona, Xavier Garcia Albiol, regretted having to close the library again and explained that "we are committed to carrying out a comprehensive reform of Can Casacuberta because Badalona and its neighbors deserve a central library in adequate conditions". The mayor has remarked that "we cannot continue to only botch municipal facilities" and has assured that "precisely because we did not carry out structural works during the time that the previous government had the library without service, now we have to close it again for a new incidence.
