At least six dead after a building collapses due to a gas explosion in northern Egypt

Tragedy in Egypt. At least six people lost their lives this Friday and another 27 were injured after the collapse of a residential building in Damanhour, in the north of the country.

Among the dead are three children, the youngest 3 years old, according to local authorities informed the Associated Press (AP) agency.

According to the first investigations carried out by the emergency teams, the cause of the collapse was the explosion of some kitchen gas cylinders stored in the basement of a four-story apartment building.

The explosion and the subsequent collapse occurred in the city of Damanhour (Beheira region), located in the Nile delta, approximately 150 kilometers from Cairo. The Egyptian public prosecutor's office reported late on Friday that the storage of the gas cylinders was in breach of safety regulations.

The search tasks continued overnight to find the missing under the rubble, while the injured have been transferred to the Damanhour National Medical Institute, the Ministry of Health and Population reported in a statement. The police opened an investigation to find out the circumstances of the incident.
