Asabys launches its second fund, of 200 million

Asabys, the venture capital manager founded by Josep Lluís Sanfeliu and Clara Campàs, has started marketing its second fund, specialized in health innovation, which expects to reach 200 million euros in capital.

The fund, called Sabadell Asabys Health Innovation Investments II, will carry out the first closing in the coming days because it has already committed an investment of 100 million euros, a large part from investors who already participated in the manager's first fund, which raised 117 millions of euros. Marketing will be open for twelve months.

Clara Campàs, managing partner of the manager, explained that the fund plans to make some 15 investments, compared to the 12 companies in which the first has entered "because the trend is to raise larger rounds to provide companies with more financial stability" . The fund, Campàs explained, will once again have Banc Sabadell as its anchor investor. The Catalan bank was already the first participant in the first fund, to which it contributed close to 10% of the capital, and on this occasion it plans to significantly increase this percentage.

The fund also has the investment commitment of Alantra Investment Pool (Alantra and Mutua), which also participates in the capital of the manager, with 35%.

The manager also received contributions from the European Investment Fund, Fondico and the ICF in its first fund and plans to present itself to the official calls to have its participation in this second.

Asabys has specialized in technology projects applied to the field of health, such as applications, telemedicine or medical devices, "fields that have skyrocketed with the pandemic," acknowledged Josep Lluís Sanfeliu, managing partner of the firm. Asabys invests both in newly created companies and in consolidating other growth ones.

Sanfeliu stressed that Asabys has been studying operations for this fund for several months, which could materialize in the coming weeks. SAHII 2 plans to invest 50% of its capital in Spain and the rest mainly in Europe, although they are open to going further "if opportunities arise as co-investors, through invitations from some of the funds that usually accompany us in our Spanish investments" Campas explained. In his first fund, Catalonia also had a strong presence "where we have a very mature health ecosystem and many opportunities arise", which he now plans to repeat.
