Andy Fletcher, founding member of British alternative rock band Depeche Mode, has died on Thursday at the age of 60, the band announced in a message on social media.

"We are shocked and filled with immense sadness at the untimely passing of our dear friend, family member and band member," said the group formed in 1980.

"He had a true heart of gold and was always there when you needed support, a lively conversation, a good laugh or a cold beer. Our hearts go out to his family," they said in the statement.

Fletcher, along with Vince Clarke, Martin Gore and David Gahan, was one of the founders of the iconic music formation.
