Adriana Lastra resigns as Deputy Secretary General of the PSOE

The planned remodeling of the leadership of the PSOE that Pedro Sánchez decided to undertake after the socialist electoral debacle in Andalusia last June starts today, once the debate on the state of the nation is over, after the deputy general secretary of the party, Adriana Lastra, has announced that she has submitted her resignation.

"In recent months there have been important changes in my personal life that require me to be calm and rest and that, in the last two weeks, have forced me to take a leave of absence that will last for some time," Lastra pointed out. , who is pregnant, in the statement reporting her resignation.

"Given the difficulty of combining the demands of rest and care, essential in my current situation, with the intensity required by the leadership of the party, I have submitted my resignation," Lastra announced.

The Asturian leader, who according to socialist sources had been in a tough internal struggle in recent months with Ferraz's organization secretary, Santos Cerdán, explained in her statement that she had already transferred her decision to resign, "days ago", to the secretary general of the PSOE and President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez.

“For a socialist militant, being deputy secretary general of the PSOE is one of the most beautiful responsibilities that exist, it is also a very demanding task in terms of time, effort and care”, explained Lastra, who in her statement thanks Sánchez “all these years traveled on a path that many believed impossible and that we have made a reality step by step”.

Sánchez himself has fired Lastra, assuring that "we will continue working together". “You are an exemplary socialist”, the Chief Executive has transferred to him. “Thanks to your commitment and dedication during all these years, the change in the PSOE and in Spain was possible”, he thanked her.

Now it remains to be revealed whether Sánchez will proceed to appoint a new deputy general secretary of the party or leave the post vacant. In fact, it was José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero who recovered this position for José Blanco in 2008, in which Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba placed Elena Valenciano in 2012. Until then, the deputy general secretary of the party had only been occupied by Alfonso Guerra, between 1979 and 1997, during the terms of Felipe González. Adriana Lastra (Ribadesella, 1979), accepted the position in June 2017. A year later, in June 2018, Sánchez also placed Lastra as spokesperson for the socialist group in Congress, a position in which she was relieved in September 2021 by the Canarian leader Héctor Gómez.
