Activists throw a liquid similar to oil in a showcase of the Egyptian Museum of Barcelona

Two militant activists from the Futuro Vegetal organization "dipped" this Sunday with a liquid that "simulated oil" the display case of a replica of a pharaonic mummy in the Egyptian Museum of Barcelona in protest against the climate emergency.

They have also sprayed the wall with "fake blood" and have displayed a banner with the message: "COPCA COLA 2.5º", in reference to the COP27 summit that is being held these days in Egypt.

Through a statement, they have subsequently pointed out that the allusions to Coca-Cola have to do with the fact that COP27 considers that "it is sponsored by this multinational, a corporation identified as the world's largest contributor to plastic pollution ", and they also want to underline with the protest that "the rise in global temperature will cause an unstable climate and serious consequences throughout the planet."

One of the activists, who has stuck her hand to one of the showcases on the wall, has indicated that she was carrying out the action because "we can no longer stand that governments wash their image in COPs to deceive the population, without taking real measures ".

In his opinion, "while the UN foresees scenarios of 2.5ºC, our political leaders sit down for the 27th time at a table paid by Coca-Cola, an 'ecocidal' corporation, to take some photos and return to their countries not to wear out any real action".

The other activist has indicated that "the historical moment we are living in places us in two positions, either we revolutionize the way of life we have and bring about a radical change in the system that democratizes decision-making with respect to the economic and political model, or we are doomed to extinction".

A spokesman for the Egyptian Museum explained to EFE that although they have reinforced security as a result of other similar incidents that have occurred in recent weeks in different cities around the world, "they knew very well what they were doing, everything has gone very quickly and they have finished by pouring a liquid on one of the display cases with a mummy and on the wall".

They have arrived accompanied by a photographer, a total of half a dozen people, and the same activists have asked the center to call the Mossos d'Esquadra when they have finished "their performance".

The museum has had to close the affected room "with the damage caused to visitors and the center", without having finished calculating how much the damage caused today can amount to. In any case, the aforementioned sources have affirmed that "it has fallen to us because the climate summit is being held in Egypt."

Once the Mossos d'Esquadra have arrived at the museum, the activists have disengaged from the showcases without any arrests, although the center plans to file a complaint for damages to the attendees.

Vegetal Future is described as a movement ascribed to Rebellion or Extinction and Scientific Rebellion and "pursues the resolution of the Climate Crisis through the adoption of a plant-based agri-food system."

It has a presence in seventy different countries and is made up of some 1,140 local groups, which want "the truth to be told about the urgency of the climate crisis, for emissions to be drastically reduced and for citizen assemblies to be launched to unblock the decision-making and a method, civil disobedience".

On November 5, and as has happened before in other museums around the world, two activists from Futuro Vegetal stuck to the frames of the paintings of The Naked Maja and The Clothed Maja by Francisco de Goya exhibited at the Prado National Museum in Madrid as a sign of protest against the climate emergency.
