A 21-year-old girl has died in Girona hours after being hit with her bicycle by a car that did not respect a yield at a crossroads in the city, the city council of the capital of Girona reported this Sunday in a statement.
The event took place yesterday morning at the intersection of Josep Viader i Moliner streets and Illa street.
According to the first indications of the Municipal Police, the car that was driving north on Illa street did not respect the give way sign and ran over the young woman, who was driving on a bike lane on Josep Viader i Moliner street.
The young woman was taken to the Josep Trueta hospital in Girona, where she died hours later.
The two occupants of the car, according to the statement, are under police investigation for this incident.
In a message on social networks released today by the mayor of Girona, Lluc Salellas, the mayor "deeply regrets the death of Iris", conveys his condolences to the family, indicates that "these things should not happen" and ensures that the Governors are "obliged to work to make cities safer and 'cyclable'".
