A swarm of tornadoes ripping through the southern United States has left a trail of destruction in Louisiana, killing at least three people and injuring about 20 others, according to the count so far. Among the victims are a mother and her son whose house was completely destroyed. Collapse of houses, destruction of streets, street furniture and cars, power outages... These were some of the most prominent effects caused by violent tornadoes when they touched down.
Other deaths attributed to the storm include a 56-year-old woman who died after a tornado struck her home in the Killona area of St. Charles Parish, the Louisiana Department of Health confirms.
The mother and child died after a tornado destroyed their home in the northwestern Louisiana community of Keithville. Sources with the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office said the bodies of the mother and son were found hours apart, far from where their home once stood.
Multiple communities across Louisiana reported the long list of destruction the tornadoes left in their wake, with roofs torn off, homes splintered, debris strewn across roads and cars overturned. Up to more than 50,000 customers lost power in Louisiana and Mississippi this past Wednesday night.
There were at least 49 reports of tornadoes in Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, Alabama and Florida, according to the Storm Prediction Center. More tornado reports are likely as surveyors continue to verify damage.
