A study in Catalonia identifies molecular changes in patients with severe covid

A study by the Pere Virgili Health Research Institute (IISPV) and the Joan XXIII Hospital in Tarragona has identified the molecular changes when a person contracts Covid-19 and develops severe symptoms.

It is a work with a multi-omic approach, which allows "to delve deeper into the causes of the disease until we know its behavior at the molecular level," both institutions reported in a statement this Wednesday.

They have compared two groups of patients: some mild and others with severe complications, to understand the changes at the molecular level (and the patterns that follow) when a patient worsens to being serious.

Severely ill patients have complications that end up harming their quality of life and that are a consequence of alterations in key mechanisms for the proper functioning of the body, such as that which regulates blood coagulation or those related to general metabolism or the production of blood. lipids.

An imbalance in these last two processes, for example, can end up significantly weakening the person's immune system because these cells stop performing their protective and defensive function against infections.

Discovering the molecular patterns underlying the alteration of these mechanisms will serve to treat these patients in a more effective and personalized way. On the other hand, it will also serve to better understand the causes of the so-called persistent covid, a syndrome recognized by the WHO. It is suffered by certain people who have had the virus and present symptoms such as chronic fatigue, gastrointestinal problems or difficulties related to the neuromotor system.
