A runner dies in the Malaga half marathon

A 58-year-old runner of Norwegian nationality, registered in the 31 TotalEnergies Malaga Half Marathon that was held this Sunday, has died after reaching the finish line, as reported by the City Council of the capital and the Emergency service 112 Andalusia.

As they have indicated to Europa Press from 112, around 12:00 they have been alerted by the 061 health services that there was a runner from said test in cardiorespiratory arrest in the area of ​​the finish line, in the vicinity of the athletics stadium .

The City Council has specified that the athlete has been treated by doctors from the two Red Cross mobile ICUs that were part of the device for this sports event, where cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) maneuvers were performed on him, despite which he has deceased. The runner had participated in the same test in Malaga in 2019.

The race, organized by Motorpres Ibérica and Málaga Sports and sponsored by the City Council, through Málaga Deporte y Eventos, has had a self-protection plan, "greater than that required in this type of event", they have indicated from the Consistory in a release.

This plan has included an advanced health post at the finish line, eight ICUs, four advanced life support and four basic life support, two 4x4 support vehicles. In total there have been 54 toilets: nine doctors, ten nurses and 14 people in charge of first aid, 20 emergency technicians and a coordinator.

The City Council has activated the Civil Protection psychosocial group so that both it and the Parcemasa Psychological Guidance and Support Group assist the relatives of the deceased. During the course of the race, another participant had to be taken by ambulance to the Virgen de la Victoria University Clinical Hospital.
