A new suspect arrested for the attempted assassination of Vice President Cristina Fernández

The Argentine Justice has arrested a woman on Tuesday for the attack on Argentine Vice President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner. In total, there are already three people arrested for the attack that occurred on September 1 against her, judicial sources have confirmed to Efe.

The arrest occurred after information about the new suspect was found on the mobile phone of the partner of the alleged perpetrator of the attack, Fernando Sabag Montiel, according to the main newspapers Clarín and La Nación.

The new detainee was allegedly part of a small informal organization that planned the attack on the influential leftist vice president, according to reports.

Previously, along with Sabag, a 35-year-old Brazilian, his girlfriend, Brenda Uliarte, a 23-year-old Argentine, was also arrested. Both suspects are accused of "having tried to kill" the former president of Argentina (2007-2015) "with the planning and prior agreement between the two."

The investigations have determined that the suspects had the weapon and its ammunition "since a date prior to the event", at least since August 5, 2021, "without having the proper legal authorization."

From the information provided by the seized cell phones, elements emerged where the Justice was able to establish that there was another attempted attack against the vice president that was aborted.

Cristina Fernández suffered a failed attack on September 1, when a man used a weapon twice, which did not fire, centimeters from her face, while the vice president greeted her followers stationed at a vigil outside her house, in the capital's neighborhood of Recoleta.

According to Justice, Sabag Montiel, "taking advantage of the state of defenselessness generated by the crowd", aimed at Fernández's face "with a single-action semi-automatic pistol, caliber 32 auto, Bersa brand, Lusber model", which fired "at least one occasion without firing", despite having "five bullet cartridges of the same caliber and being suitable".

Meanwhile, Uliarte "was present in the vicinity of the place where they arrived together."

This Tuesday it was also reported that three new searches were carried out to seize cell phones, electronic devices and items of interest to the cause.

Reports also indicate that judicial officials have increased security for her and her family following telephoned death threats in recent days.
