A neighborhood collection allows El Lokal to remain in the Raval of Barcelona

An improvised collection from around the house made in just five days will allow the association of activists in the form of a bookstore El Lokal to take ownership of the ground floor where they have been located all their lives and remain that way in the Raval. In reality, this story is a somewhat softened and Ciutat Vella-esque version of the movie It's a Wonderful Life.

Iñaki García, the historic head of this establishment, of this entity that truly brings together a hundred very brave neighbors, did not see it very clearly, nor did he imagine that in the end it would turn out to be so simple. Like James Stewart and George Bailey. “The owner of the premises did not want to renew the contract,” says García, “but we could exercise our right of first refusal, but the amount was considerable…”.

Lokal is basically dedicated to selling books, records, t-shirts and other very alternative items, and also to lending electric generators, kitchen equipment and other accessories to anyone who may need them... and also usually gets involved in neighborhood struggles in the area. Raval, which are not few and which never find an end point (speculation, drug trafficking, dirt...). So El Lokal has much more friends than García himself imagined. “In the end, about 500 people got involved in just five days, and with what a cooperative lent us we now have the minimum... I have no words, this week we signed!” And if everything goes well, then they will renovate the place, which is sorely needed.
