A man with Diogenes syndrome weighing 250 kilos is rescued from his apartment in El Prat

The Generalitat Bombers have rescued a 48-year-old man with Diogenes syndrome weighing about 250 kilos from his apartment in El Prat de Llobregat (Barcelona).

It was the man himself who called the 112 emergency telephone number around 8:30 a.m. this Wednesday to notify him that he could not leave the house, sources from the Generalitat Fire Department confirmed to EFE on Thursday.

The troops displaced to the man's home, located on the ground floor, could not access through the door due to the large amount of garbage accumulated behind it. For this reason, the rescue team chose to make a hole in the wall to gain access to the interior of the apartment.

Once inside the house, part of the accumulated garbage was removed in order to reach the man, who was evacuated through the hole previously made in the wall with a stretcher helped by a mechanical bull to lower him to ground level. The man had not left the apartment for three years.

The staff of the Medical Emergency System (SEM) treated the man, who was later transferred to the Bellvitge Hospital.

After he was rescued in an operation that lasted hours, workers from the El Prat City Council cleaning brigade stayed at the house to remove the accumulated rubbish.
