A hiker dies in Álava after falling from the crest of a mountain

A 69-year-old man lost his life this Sunday when he fell into the void from the crest of a mountain, when he was hiking in the Álava town of Labastida. An Ertzaintza helicopter, with members of the Surveillance and Rescue Unit (UVR), has recovered the victim's body.

As reported by the Basque Department of Security, after ten past nine in the morning this Sunday, a call made to SOS Deiak 112 alerted of the fall of a mountaineer while walking on the top of a hill in Labastida.

Resources from the Ertzaintza, firefighters and Osakidetza have been sent to the place, who have verified that the hiker was lifeless. Due to the steepness of the terrain, the body had to be recovered by members of the UVR together with firefighters for its transfer by helicopter to the Txagorritxu Hospital. Subsequently, he has been taken to the Forensic Anatomical Institute.
