A georadar in the Tàrrega cemetery points to the existence of a Civil War smelter

Tàrrega City Council has completed the survey campaign with georadar inside the city cemetery to determine the existence of mass graves linked to the Civil War. It has been possible to confirm the location of the mass grave already indicated in 2007 from documentary references.

The results point to the presence of a second grave located in another of the plots of the necropolis. The technicians already suspected its existence as a burial place during the war due to the presence of crosses on the plot, which could correspond to soldiers from the Mas Colom military hospital and victims of the 1938 bombing of the city.

Surveys have also been useful as preliminary work for possible archaeological interventions. The verifications with the georadar have been carried out in the entire area with grass in the old sector of the cemetery.

The georadar transmits electromagnetic waves that cross different layers of the subsoil, generating topographic data that detects movements of earth, objects or structures.

The action has been promoted by the Department of Heritage and Historical Memory with the collaboration of the Tàrrega Urgell Museum and the support of the Institut d'Estudis llerdenses and the Diputación de Lleida.
