A crucial trial between FIFA, UEFA and the Super League begins

The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) welcomes from today a crucial battle with the Super League on one side, and UEFA and FIFA on the other. Although the pharaonic project headed by Real Madrid, Barça and Juventus seemed parked, the truth is that it was only hibernating waiting for the hearing to come, which should last two days and whose resolution, binding in all countries, can alter the status current quo of world football. Of course, the 17 judges chosen to form the 'Grand Chamber' to which the case has been assigned are not expected to offer a resolution for a few months given the complexity of the matter.

The Super League filed a complaint in April 2021 against UEFA and FIFA for, under its prism, exercising a dominant position and not allowing free competition, thus stopping the creation of the new competition and imposing sanctions on the promoters. Some sanctions that have been paralyzed after being attended to the precautionary measures claimed by the Super League.

The European judges will have to decide if the Super League is a competition that breaks the rules of development of the sport of the European Union or if, on the contrary, UEFA and FIFA exercise a dominant and monopolistic position in international competitions.
