A Barcelona judge investigates Pablo Casado for his statements about Catalan at school

The Investigating Court 29 of Barcelona is investigating Pablo Casado for his statements about Catalan at school. The former leader of the Popular Party said that there were "teachers with instructions not to let children go to the bathroom because they speak Spanish." These words motivated the Generalitat, by order of President Pere Aragonès, to present a complaint for insults, slander and a hate crime that has been accepted by the magistrate, Santiago García García. This is stated in a car to which La Vanguardia has had access.

The judge has summoned Casado to testify on January 30, 2023 and gives him the possibility of appearing by videoconference from the Popular Party headquarters on Génova Street. Likewise, the magistrate asks the PP to provide the complete recording of the press conference in which Casado made the statements that are "the object of these proceedings."

Casado made these statements at an event in La Coruña in the context of the political controversy unleashed as a result of the court decision that forced a group from a school in Canet de Mar to teach 25% of classes in Spanish. Upon hearing these words, the Generalitat first filed a complaint with the Supreme Court, because then Casado had the status of appraised, but shortly after he lost it when he ceased to be a deputy. The Supreme then filed the complaint and the Government decided to present another before an ordinary court in Barcelona. At first, this court was disqualified in favor of one from La Coruña since that is where these statements were made, but the Generalitat filed an appeal demanding the transfer that has finally been granted.

The Government spokeswoman announced the presentation of the complaint considering that Casado's statements were not only "absolutely false", but also "directly attack the whole of the teaching staff in Catalonia and the Catalan educational system".
