What does an architect do in a polygon?

Granada has given relevant names to the Spanish music scene, such as Enrique Morente, Miguel Ríos, Los Planetas, Lori Meyers, etc. And it also has a leading venue on the electronic music circuit: La Industrial Copera, located in the Polígono de la Zubia, next to the Vega Granada. His ship stands next to the headquarters of Baby Boom ("The store for your baby"); somewhat further on are the premises of a funeral home; and, even further, those of Don Rebajón Furniture (“Cheaper…impossible!”).

In such a select environment, the presence or work of architects is not usual. The warehouses are often built by engineering companies, following a predetermined pattern... That's how it was until the covid hit hard and the owners of La Industrial Copera occupied the lot adjoining their club to set up an outdoor stage to ease the pandemic restrictions. To this end, and to fit it out, they called Tomás García Píriz, who was responsible, with Javier Castellano, for the restless local office CUAC Arquitectura.

In relatively nearby residential areas, the opening of this outdoor venue, with live or canned music at full blast during weekend nights, has not generated much enthusiasm. But among the around 500 people that its capacity admits, the opinion is much more favorable. Contributing to this is the intervention of García Píriz, who combines in the so-called Jardín de la Copera the industrial line and the colors of the Traffic signage (yellow, also black) with the vegetation (false peppers dominate) that evokes the natural surroundings De La Vega.

The resulting open-air room – a stage, a side bar, some tables, seats, a hallway and a wall to isolate a bit from the polygonal atmosphere – is simple, also fresh and, according to the author, “zero kilometer”. Because the plants come from a neighboring nursery, the bar and the benches are alveolar slabs normally used in industrial buildings, and several elements, such as the access gate, were already in situ before the intervention, whose price, consequently, has been very convenient: 400 euros per square meter. Lets the music sound!
