Arson sparks riot in Tehran prison

Protests in Iran over the death of the young Mahsa Amini continue throughout the country. Late this Saturday there was a major fire in the Evin prison, in the north of Tehran, and it is the main one in the country. This penitentiary center houses a large number of detainees during the recent protests against the country's government. As reported by the NGO Iran Human Rights (IHR) -based in Oslo- "screams and shots were recorded in the compound."

By contrast, the official Irna news agency noted that the situation in Evin prison "is under control".

"Disorders and clashes were observed on Saturday night," a senior security official was quoted as saying by Irna, adding that "rioters" had set a fire. "At the moment the situation is completely under control and calm has returned to the prison," he added.

"Disorders and clashes were observed on Saturday night," a senior security official was quoted by Irna as saying, adding that "rioters" had set a fire.

The website of the Ministry of Justice, Mizan Online, indicates, for its part, that the fire occurred "after a conflict between several inmates with economic convictions and robberies."

As a result, at least eight people were injured in the fire and clashes that occurred in Evin, official Iranian media reported. "There were no deaths in this accident and the number of injured is eight people," a security source told the state agency IRNA.

Citizen revolts have been taking place in Iran since the death on September 16 of the 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish woman, Mahsa Amini, who had been arrested three days earlier by the moral police for allegedly violating the strict dress code of the Islamic Republic for women, including wearing the veil.
