Serra reveals that another coup d'état was conceived prior to the 1982 elections

The former Minister of Defense of the first Government of Felipe González, Narcís Serra, has revealed that his predecessor and Minister of Defense of the UCD, Alberto Oliart, alerted him to a coup plan for 27-O, 1982, a day of reflection prior to to the elections that the PSOE won with an absolute majority.

At a round table this Sunday at the PSC headquarters to commemorate 40 years of that victory, Serra said that he was summoned to Madrid to meet with Oliart and González on October 10.

It was then that he decided to leave the Mayor's Office of Barcelona and accept the position of Defense Minister, an appointment that he had rejected months before.

"Oliart explained to us that there was a second coup d'état prepared for the day of reflection," he said, although it could be stopped.

"If the result had been that we won but we had not had an absolute majority in the cameras, we would not have been able to do what we had to do," he added.

Narcís Serra shared the round table with the leader of the PSC, Salvador Illa, and the historical deputy of the Congress, Teresa Cunillera.
