LaFact de Terrassa debuts in dance with Alberto Alonso's 'Carmen Suite'

LaFact (Terrassa Cultural Factory) premieres its first dance production Carmen Suite by Alberto Alonso this weekend as part of the 39th BBVA Dance Season of LaFact Cultural.

At the request of the Russian dancer Maya Plisetskaya, the play Carmen Suite was created, which has become a worldwide classic. She herself premiered it at the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow in 1967 and later presented it that same year in Havana with the Cuban National Ballet Company. There, the role of Carmen was played by the legendary Alicia Alonso, who was the director and dancer of the Cuban company.

The history of the function dates back to a tobacco shop in Seville in the 19th century, where Carmen, a somewhat insightful gypsy woman with a free soul, works. Her luck will lead her to be arrested and sent to prison as a result of a fight with tobacco dealers. From this moment on, Carmen will be involved in a love triangle when she meets Don José behind bars and seduces a military man to get his freedom. At the same time, she will meet a bullfighter who will try to win her over, causing a fatal outcome.

The cast of performers in this Egarense premiere includes outstanding dancers such as Giada Rossi (National Dance Company), incarnating the role of Carmen; Sergio Bernal (Ricardo Cue Company), who plays the elegant and impotent character of Don José, and Cristo Vivancos, who gives birth to the bullfighter.

"The premiere of the piece represents a further step in LaFACT Cultural's support for dance, it not only becomes a center for exhibition, but also for training, creation and production," says the director of LaFACT Cultural, Adrià Fornés. In addition, the Factoría wants to be faithful to the piece that was performed for the first time in Havana in 1967, which is why it has the musical adaptation of the Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin and the interpretation of the Orquestra Simfònica del Vallès.
