The technology that your car will have and the DGT loves it (and you don't)

In a context of the citizens' struggle to preserve their privacy, the disseminator of innovation Pablo Foncillas wonders if we will lose it in the car. The reason, he explains, is that the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has published a tender to create a platform that connects all vehicles in 2026. But what does this mean?

"That the DGT will know in real time where every car, motorcycle and truck in this country is, it will know exactly which road it is traveling on and at what speed, among other issues," the business school professor replies. And he adds that there is a European Union (EU) plan to provide all cars on the continent with a phone SIM.

The technology has pros and cons. Starting with the advantages, it will make it possible to have real-time information on traffic and road conditions, notify the emergency services in the event of an accident, and even easily locate stolen cars. But, on the other hand, "there could be an inconvenience that seems taken from a dystopian future, and it is precisely that control can fall into the wrong hands."

In any case, Foncillas demands to respect the privacy of the data and, as far as possible, that the DGT take into account "the context and the adaptation to the circumstances".
