Everyman Theatre, Rep Stage reveal promising casts for upcoming musical premieres

Two of the most anticipated events on the Baltimore theater calendar are musicals that will receive their world or area premieres in the weeks ahead. Here's the latest casting information on both:

Everyman Theatre will unveil the freshly reworked version of "Los Otros" with music by Michael John LaChiusa, whose previous shows include "The Wild Party" and "Giant"; book and lyrics are by Ellen Fitzhugh, lyricist for the 1980s Broadway musical "Grind."

The production of "Los Otros," which marks the work's Baltimore-Washington premiere, runs March 22 to April 23.

The semi-autobiographical musical looks at two Californians — Lillian, a white woman, and Carlos, a Hispanic man — and the things that connect and separate them.

"Los Otros" will be directed by Everyman's recently named associate artistic director, Noah Himmelstein, who impressively guided "An Inspector Calls" for the company last season. He will be joined by musical director Jon Kalbfleisch, whose extraordinary work as resident musical director at Signature Theatre has long been in evidence.

First produced in 2012 in Los Angeles, "Los Otros" has undergone a "reimagining" commissioned by Everyman and given a workshop in New York last fall.

The cast features Judy McLane as Lillian. Her Broadway credits include a long stint with "Mamma Mia!" — seven years as Tanya and more than three in the lead role of Donna, up until the show's closing in 2015.

McLane will be partnered by another Broadway veteran, Philip Hernandez. He was in the original cast of "Kiss of the Spider Woman" and became the only actor to play both Inspector Javert and Jean Valjean in "Les Miserables" on Broadway.

Close on the heels of "Los Otros" will be the world premiere of "Dorian's Closet" at Rep Stage. This musical traces the life of drag performer Dorian Corey, a major presence in the Harlem ball scene who gained unusual notoriety after her death in 1993 when a mummified body was discovered in her apartment.

"Dorian's Closet," directed by Rep Stage's co-artistic director Joseph Ritsch, has a book and lyrics by Richard Mailman, music by Ryan Haase. The production, with music direction by Stacey Antoine and choreography by Rachel Dolan, will run April 26 to May 14.

The title role will be performed by Stephen Scott Wormley. He was the cool Seaweed in the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's semi-staging of "Hairspray" in June, and an ensemble member in a production of that musical at Signature Theatre during the 2011-12 season.

Also in the cast: Dwayne Washington (Pepper), whose his credits include last year's New York production of "Figaro (90210)," a bilingual adaptation of Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro"; and Jay Adriel (Robert), who was featured in "DreamGirls" at Signature Theatre and "Smokey Joe's Cafe" at Arena Stage.
